New to Law Enforcement

Please ask about our expedited processes for both

In State or Out of State Applicants

**ATTENTION TROOPER CANDIDATES **

The Maine State Police is seeking interested candidates to join our team as Troopers.  For new Troopers who have no experience in law enforcement, the first step is to attend the Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy in Vassalboro, Maine.  This program is also known as the BLETP.

If you apply to us now, we can sponsor you to attend a BLETP as a Maine State Trooper Cadet.

Any cadet from any agency who is new to law enforcement will need to attend to become certified officers in the State of Maine.  After completing this 18 week residential academy you will then participate in some basic field training and attend our 6 week, largely non-residential Advanced Training Program.  More information on this 6 Week Advanced Training Program can be found below.

The next BLETP for this year is open to all in-state and out-of-state candidates and the time-frame is from:

January – May, 2025.

The application process for the winter BLETP beginning in January 2025 is open through September 30th, 2024.

Despite these dates, we have a rolling admissions process.  If you miss the cut-off date for the next training class, we will still hire you and have meaningful work until the next training class.  Please do not let these dates deter you from applying now!

Trooper Applications are always being accepted.

What is the 6 Week Advanced Training Program I will attend after the BLETP?

This program was created for officers who have already graduated from the BLETP or another certified police academyOur Troopers come from all walks of life.  Some may start their professional career as teachers or in the trades, but most of our applicants come to us from other agencies who are looking for a diversified career and the opportunity to do more in their law enforcement career.  This program is a streamlined process that will allow you to learn from experienced officers who are also in the process to become Maine State Troopers.

As a non-residential academy, unless it is a range week, you will go home each night at a previously designated time.  You will be expected to return in the morning hungry for more training.  Much of the training will be done in a collegiate environment and you will be wearing a suit and tie or other appropriate office attire/clothing or a provided uniform.  Lunch will be provided each day.  Recruits will be provided a take-home vehicle for use during training until you are issued your State Police cruiser.

This program is intended to be strict but respectful.  You will be required to keep your clothes ironed and shoes polished.  You will be required to follow directions and be punctual.  This program will be more like what an officer has attended as in-service training with some additional physical and scenario challenges such as defensive tactics and  physical obstacle courses.  This will not be a high stress environment but for those scenarios when a trooper is required to perform under stress.

This program is not intended to lower our standards but to hasten the process of identifying those officers who are currently meeting our core values and acknowledges your training by using that experience as a foundation to build upon and to instill in you the pride, the habits, the integrity and the standard of excellence we see amongst our ranks.

Benefits of a Maine State Trooper

Troopers retire at 50% of their maximum salary while employees working over 25 years receive an additional 2% of retirement pay for each additional year worked beyond 25 years (This retirement benefit also includes state paid medical insurance)
