Assignment:

Please find a current event (newspaper, radio, TV, etc-open to all media)

that addresses a diversity issue or a concept that we have discussed in our text or in class.

Diversity:

• Acculturation: blending your own culture and adding on the ways of another culture while retaining your own sense of cultural identity.

ENLACE encourages Latino and Hispanic students to improve their education and provides the means for them to continue on to college. ENLACE encourages acculturation, by helping the Lation and Hispanics go on to college, doing something they wouldn't usually be able to do. In ENLACE students are envouraged to adapt to the American Culture, but never required to change their own culture in any way.

• Sociotyping: when accurate characteristics are attributed to a cultural group as a collective.

ENLACE understands that many Latino and Hispanic students do not have the means necessary to go to college (an accurate characteristic) and the program is centered around opening up the possibilities of going to college for these students.

• Ethnicity: refers to the sense of belonging to a cultural group.

ENLACE is centered around the Hispanic and Latino community, giving the students something to belong to and somewhere they can feel safe and comfortable.
