This project was launched in 1990 with the goal of mapping the complete human genome. This goal was accomplished and published to the public in 2003. The information released from this project fuels research around the world as we continue to study the human genome.
Understanding the human genome allows us to better treat health conditions, predict health complications before they arise, and make informed decisions about our health and the health of potential offspring.
Several companies have begun offering home genetic tests that give some (not complete) insight into the presence or absence of certain variants (alleles) that could indicate potential health conditions. The more we understand about the human genome, the more effective tests will become in detecting genetic predispositions. This could allow for earlier intervention and better treatments of some conditions.
