Synopsis:
Today i'll be analyzing Jason Derulo's famous music video "Wiggle" featuring Snoop Dog. To start, the first scene is Jason laying in bed being surrounded and cuddled by eight women who have very little clothing on. Then it shows Snoop Dog with a pair of binoculars leading into a short clip of the camera angled right below a women's body to show her butt hanging out her very short booty shorts. There are many times where the camera will show angles of a women's body that could be perceived as sexual. This video could definitely be analyzed in Jean Kilbourne's "Two Ways a Women can get hurt" article.
Sexual Angles:
As you can see in the screenshot, the camera angle is all about the women's butt. Not "unnnatural" in a sense because they are just walking. But why that certain angle? Kilbourne said in her article "Sex in advertising is pornographic because it dehumanizes and objectifies people, especially women, and because it fetishizes products, imbues them with an erotic charge- which dooms us to disapointment since products never can fulfill our sexual desires or meet our emotional needs." (Kilbourne pg 420 paragaph 2). This picture is most definitely dehumanizing women for the sole purpose of their body and for what reason exactly? For decades, society has sexualized women in so many ways you couldn't count them on two hands. There are many different body types different then the one shown in the photo. Men may think this is "hot" or "sexy" as one would say. Granted I am not a man so i can't tell you their mindset, but that's how society makes them think most of the time. This can mess with a women's mentality/ self esteem making her think she's "not good enough". This is what you would call the "ideal body type" in society.
Domination:
In this scene, all those women dancing all around the men. Keep in mind, there are over 15 women pictured while there are six men. Many people can perceive this as a "gang bang" which is completely sexualizing in a way they don't want to be, coming from a womens perspective. This gives men a huge ego boost or the domination they've been craving. Let's keep in mind what the women are wearing. We see black leather boots, very short booty shorts, and a little tops while the men are fully or very near fully dressed. Why do you think that is? The men may just be having fun. I could be taking it the complete wrong way and they don't mean any sexual harm to these women. No, everyone will have a different perspective on a topic similar to this one. I don't think anyone can answer that question because there will be many different point of views and opinions on the topic.
Conclusion:
All throughout this video, there have been many scenes where the producers sexualize women in countless ways, plus male domination. For women, also stated above, this can give some sort of mentality break down and take a huge toll on their self esteem being that they "don't look like the women in the video". This video is 3 minutes and 43 seconds long, did it ever show any man being "sexualized" in any sort of way? It was all about the women. As I stated above, this may have not been their intentions. But that's the way my brain processed it throughout the entire video.
