At the 70th Anniversary Meeting of the Mycological Society of Japan, we will hold a public symposium for general audiences titled “Fungi Flourishing Unnoticed” on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Kasuga Auditorium, University of Tsukuba, as part of our commemorative events. Admission is free, and no prior registration is required. Everyone is welcome to attend.
As a special feature of the symposium, there will be a performance of the Kyōgen play “Kusabira (Mushrooms)” by the University of Tsukuba Noh and Kyōgen Research Society. This will be followed by a lecture and panel discussion in which the performers will be joined by selected mushroom specialists from the Mycological Society of Japan, who will explore the “truth” behind “Kusabira” from a scientific perspective.
Synopsis of Kyōgen ‘Kusabira (Mushrooms)’
A man is troubled by a large mushroom that has begun growing in his own house. No matter how many times he pulls it out, it keeps reappearing, so he reluctantly turns to a mountain ascetic (yamabushi) for help. The yamabushi chants various incantations and, through his spiritual powers, attempts to drive the mushroom away…
Kyōgen is a traditional form of theater that developed during the Muromachi period and can be described as a comedic drama similar to modern-day sketch comedy. It is typically performed on a Noh stage, alternating with Noh, a form of tragic musical drama. Together, Noh and Kyōgen are known as Nohgaku. Unlike Noh, Kyōgen encourages open laughter—so please relax and enjoy the performance.
