Take a look inside our self-contained classroom!
Sensory & Gross Motor Center
This area of the classroom is used to practice gross motor skills and engage in regulating activities. Sensory items are available in this area like our ball pit, swing, water mat, sensory light, pressure vest, body sock, weighted blanket, and fidgets.
Table Time Space:
This is where students complete their "Table Time", which is 1:1 instruction. This can consist of Discrete Trial Teaching, 1:1 Instruction on IEP goals and assessments. Students bring their "Table Time" schedule PEC to this space and place it on the table to initiate their transition to table time.
Independent Work Station:
During our afternoon work rotations, if students are not in a small group lesson, they are completing their independent work drawers. These drawers provide students an opportunity to build independence and practice targeted skills. Examples of what could be found in these drawers are: name tracing sheets, file folders, velcro matching activities, etc.
Play Center:
Our children learn through play, an important part of their development. Our play center offers opportunities for all different types of play. To encourage students to engage in a variety of play types, increase their interests, and build vocabulary, we switch out our toys each month.
Morning Meeting:
Morning meeting is usually the students' favorite time of day (other than play). This time is spent listening to songs, completing their morning books, answering questions, greeting friends, learning about the months of the year, identifying the weather, practicing SEL skills, functional skills like identifying body parts, brief academics (letters, numbers, shapes) and our Core Word of the Week.
Group Time Table:
This is where we complete our Whole Group and Small Group instruction: crafts, multi-sensory math, fine motor, ADLs (activities of daily living), and science/social studies.
Calm Corner:
This is where students can relax, be by themselves, and practice identifying their emotions and engaging in coping strategies.
PECS:
PECS, AAC, and visuals are a big part our classroom. A main component of our instruction is functional communication training. Visuals are a helpful tool in aiding communication and increasing independence.
