Technical Requirements
To follow the classes of the Game Technology and Design Stream, it greatly helps to be able to program in some language. Which particular language is of lesser importance, however, we recommend you familiarise yourself with Java (for early tutorials), Python (the de facto language for machine learning and AI applications), and C# (used by the popular Unity game engine).
For Java development, we recommend the Eclipse IDE: https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/
For Python development, we recommend the PyCharm IDE: https://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/ (To make the most of PyCharm, be sure to check out the Professional version - free for students)
For game projects, we recommend you install an up-to-date version of Unity: https://unity.com/
Of course, if you have another favourite IDE or programming language, you are welcome to use those for the completion of tutorials and final projects.
For writing your reports, we recommend using LaTex. Overleaf is an easy-to-use online editor, with cloud storage for your work: https://www.overleaf.com/ If you are unfamiliar with LaTex be sure to attend the tutorial offered as part of the Methods for Game Research (IDG5158) course.
Global Game Jam
We are running the Malta Global Game Jam each year at the Institute of Digital Games! The Global Game Jam is a creative event where you team up with other people to make a playable game in 48 hours. Students are welcome as both participants and volunteers for the event! Availability and registration instructions are announced at a closer date to the Game Jam.
