To establish genuine inclusivity in a classroom, it's crucial for students to feel a sense of belonging, connection, and acceptance within their community. Elementary educators play a pivotal role in fostering this environment by facilitating opportunities for students to engage with one another, discuss their unique attributes and talents, and cultivate relationships. Implementing community-building exercises, such as icebreakers, encourages interaction among students and fosters new friendships. Within their teaching approach, teachers should actively promote an atmosphere where students acknowledge, appreciate, and honor their diversities, utilizing these distinctions as educational tools to instill values of acceptance and empathy.

Implementing flexible seating arrangements in classrooms offers numerous benefits for students, particularly those who struggle with being remained seated for extended periods. Flexible seating can allow students more movement which can enhance productivity and engagement. Some seating options can be standing tables, bean bag chairs, swivel chairs, camping chairs, pillows for rugs, and yoga balls, amongst many other things. Seating like this can sometimes be found in IEPs, so to ensure all students' comfort and security within the classroom, this new seating arrangement ensures that no one stands out. Through this process, students can gain autonomy in selecting seats that suit their learning preferences, leading to increased self-awareness and engagement. Flexible seating can enhance their sense of belonging and participation in the classroom community.
Implementing healing circles in the classroom serves as a valuable tool for repairing relationships and fostering empathy among students. Derived from a classroom management program, healing circles provide a structured space for students to express their feelings and address conflicts constructively. By engaging in these circles, students who struggle with managing their emotions gain opportunities to communicate their experiences and understand the perspectives of their peers to try to reach a reconciliation point. Beyond resolving conflicts, healing circles promote a culture of empathy and acceptance, demonstrating to all students that their emotions are valid and that the classroom is a safe environment for expression and growth. Additionally, integrating social-emotional learning practices, such as providing personalized calm bags with soothing tools, further supports students in managing their emotions independently. Despite occasional challenges in facilitating these circles, the overarching goal remains to cultivate inclusivity and understanding among students, fostering a supportive environment where all can thrive irrespective of their abilities.
Building and fostering an inclusive classroom is important for the well-being of your students. It opens up a more inviting atmosphere where they are encouraged to learn and they feel seen. These are all different inclusion strategies that I would like to use in my classroom. They all serve a beneficial purpose that aids in student growth. The foundation for a successful classroom lies in the flourishing of a solid foundation of building a community with your students where they feel seen and heard. This can also be seen in healing circles to keep the peace in the classroom and demonstrate how healthy conversations happen. As you get to know your students, you will begin to learn their interests and notice their academic strengths. By using this knowledge, you can make learning fun and engaging for everyone. The next step is to make learning an even playing field. This is done through providing tools to support all of your students. Learning is not one size fits all. It is individualized and we should treat it that way by finding out what supports work best for each student so they can thrive in your class. This can also be done with flexible seating. Flexible seating allows for movement and comfort. It also serves as a way to not have children feel as if they uncomfortably stand out. Flexible seating can benefit all students and make learning more comfortable for them. While observing in an inclusive classroom, I was exposed to a full classroom flexible seating arrangement. This benefited the students because it was used as a way to make them comfortable, offer them a change of scenery, and it was used as a movement break. As long as students can handle it, it serves as a great tool to have. The teacher I was with took five years to accumulate all of the seating arrangements that she had. She had yoga balls (with holders), standing desks, camping chairs, pillows for the rug, swivel chairs, and more. I hope that one day I will be able to do the same.
