Copyright has an important role in being a digital citizen as the roles of technology have increased. With technology comes forms of work often times being used without permission, however with any work that people find online it is all copyrighted, which needs permission to use it.
As citizens of the digital age it is important to understand the need for creators to protect their own works even if published online. Teaching students the value of original thinking and need to stay away from plagiarizing other works. With copyright laws and regulations being put in place within the education system it is the responsibility for teachers to follow these guidelines and educate the students on what copyright means during lessons. As it will benefit them in society if they learn at an early age what their roles as digital Citizens are. I feel the importance of phrasing should be an idea that is taught in the younger grades that can set up students ideas of copyright and what it means to not use exact words or ideas that the author uses in their own work.
Select one of the resources that is appropriate for your students, and create a report that explains why you selected the resource and how you see this resource being used in your instruction. Also, explain how this resource teaches one of the three ways to stay safe online.
Internet safety games is a resource I decided to choose, this resource reflects on the popular use of internet games for kids. By providing safe games where students are able to practice their digital citizenship and learn about the dangers of the online world while also being engaged and having fun. These games provide students with information and experience that can allow them to understand certain subjects that need to be learned at an early age. For instance the Childnet game that looks at cyberbullying can have a benefit of giving students the insight into how students may feel when they receive negative comments behind a computer. These games are created at the child's level, but allows them to critically think about what is being said. This is a great way for teachers to further discuss the subject matter in the classroom and have a deeper discussion. This teaches the students to be a responsible online citizen allowing them to think about the consequences and the affects of their actions online.
