Aloha! My name is Ms. Kristina Alger, and I am the 4th grade teacher at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic School!
I feel very at home in a Catholic school setting, as I have spent most of my life attending and teaching at Catholic schools. I spent preschool through 12th grade at Catholic schools. I attended St. Therese School for grade school and then went on to Jesuit High School in Portland, Oregon. Then, I earned my Bachelor of Science from Oregon State University with a major in Human Development and Family Science and then my Master in Education in Educational Leadership from Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawai'i. I began my teaching career in Hawai'i, teaching preschool, then Kindergarten. In the summer of 2014, I fulfilled a lifelong dream and moved to Seoul, South Korea and taught English to elementary school students for three magical years. After that, I landed in Lahaina, Hawai'i and spent time with my parents in paradise. I was ecstatic when my parents decided to retire in California. We all picked up and moved to Oceanside in 2017! I couldn't be happier here! I love the beaches and friendly people!
At the start of the 2019-2020 school year I was selected by Julie Cantillon Ph.D. , the Associate Director of the Office for Schools of the Diocese of San Diego to be a member of the Teacher Liaison Team! It consists of nine other teachers from around the Diocese. We meet monthly and act as liaisons between the Diocesan office and the teachers and schools! We host regular online meetups for teachers around the Diocese and present at our semi-annual professional development days. I am honored to be a part of this amazing team!
Some of my favorite things to do are traveling, eating while traveling, hanging out at the beach, spending quality time with my friends, and reading. This summer I read 7 books, some professionally oriented and some just for fun! One of my favorite books is 'Where the Mountain Meets the Moon' by Grace Lin. I also love watching sunsets, going to farmers markers, and spending time with my family. I have one younger sister, Andrea, and she lives in Las Vegas.
The great Nelson Mandela noted, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Sharing that sentiment, I am honored to be an educator and passionate about education. My role is influenced by a love of traveling, exploring new places, and experiencing new sights! I am a lifelong student and have a love of learning and gaining knowledge! Since moving to California, I have been thoroughly enjoying becoming acquainted with Oceanside and the surrounding areas in this beautiful part of the world. I am incredibly excited for this school year and looking forward to getting acquainted with all of you!
With Aloha,
Ms. Kristina Alger
