Ear-training is the development of skills involving understanding music aurally and being able to replicate it. These skills can be developed by listening to music, practicing instruments, trying to sing or play a song from memory or by ear, and through training in lessons. Specific training includes:
Practice playing by ear
Identifying intervals, chords, and harmonies
Playing music from memory
Duplicating what you hear on your instrument
Reading and writing music is very important for developing your musicality and growing in your instrument, however it should not be the sole focus when learning an instrument. Developing these skills includes learning:
Rhythms and time signatures
Scales and key signatures
Reading and writing in bass and treble clef
Identifying notes on the staff
Sight-reading skills (playing new music at first look)
Although these lessons are for the purpose of teaching piano or violin, I find learning an instrument is inseparable from developing your musicality. Here are some ways my lessons can do this:
Learn to express yourself through music
Gain a deeper understanding when playing and listening to music
Explore different styles and experiences
Develop a deeper musical appreciation
About Your Instructor: Mrs Sydney
I am a graduate from Boston University's School of Music. I have played violin since I was 5 years old, have about 6 years of piano experience, as well as five years teaching in beginner's piano. I have experience with student of all ages, including adults. My goal is to create a safe and positive environment for students to learn and enjoy their instrument. I teach students with little to no experience. I look forward to working with you!
My favorite part about teaching music lessons is being able to share something I have a passion for, and seeing others excited for it as well. I enjoy teaching adults because I can help them achieve what is usually a life-long dream. I enjoy teaching kids because I can see their potential, and hope they'll find passion from what I share with them. All in all, I enjoy being able to share my abilities and dedication with my community, in hopes I can inspire someone else.
