Description of Course:

Health Science Theory provides an overview of career exploration through systems of the healthcare industry. The course focuses on ethics, leadership, cultural diversity, communication skills and an introduction to medical math and research, with an emphasis on past and current healthcare trends. Small group instruction, with cooperative peer interactions, and presentation skills are necessary to be successful. This course will also introduce new topics specific to the healthcare industry to expand upon previous knowledge. Key topics include: healthcare systems, healthcare careers, law and ethics, safety and infection control, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diseases, and vital signs. This course will help prepare students for the transition into clinical or work-based experiences. The course provides a systematic study of skills in the following topics:

1. This class will require a mix of use of virtual learning, technical skills, textbook usage and hands on practice. (when we return to face-to-face learning)

2. Students may be exposed to: pictures of birth, death, surgery, nudity, and potentially infectious fluids.

3. Students will learn to explore the multiple careers and behaviors used to be successful in medicine.

4. Each student is expected to be on time and appropriately dressed, whether virtual or in person.

5. Students will learn about all ages of patients and society.

6. All students will be given the opportunity to earn a HIPPA certifications (cost $25).

Course Objectives

To learn about and employ the methods used in medicine, especially including observation, hands on learning, data gathering and reporting, and technical writing.

To understand and employ the qualities it requires to be a professional in the medical field.

To develop life skills needed to be successful as they progress through their journey of life.

Grading:

Each six weeks will consist of a minimum of 3 major grades and 8 daily grades. Galena Park ISD will provide

communication of revised “grading” policies in the event of a transition to 100% remote learning.

Grades will be placed in the following categories:

Daily – 50%

Major – 50%
