PROJECTED READING LIST
Next year we will be reading five novels or plays throughout the school year. Here's what we'll be reading, in the approximate order in which we'll read:
A Yellow Raft in Blue Water by Michael Dorris
The Crucible by Arthur Miller
The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
Beloved by Toni Morrison
A novel or nonfiction book of your choice by a contemporary U. S. author
Ms. Black's advice: "Never buy a book when you can borrow from the library for free!"
RECOMMENDED SUMMER ACTIVITIES
While there is no required summer work, if you don't maintain your academic skills over the summer, you'll lose some of them, so the following activities are strongly recommended:
Consider using the Summer Challenge Choice Board (above) to try out some different academic activities over the summer.
Read at least six books of your choice over the summer can make the difference between maintaining/improving your reading skills or falling behind as much as a grade level in reading.
Most high school students do not have strong enough vocabulary skills to feel confident with college-level texts. Please consider joining the 2014-2015 English III AP group on Quizlet. Go to www.quizlet.com to create a free account. Then, look for and join the group (2014-2015 English III AP Oak Grove High School--the group password is msblack) to study academic word lists. These are lists of the most commonly used words in academic texts across all subjects.
Read the editorial page of a newspaper and practice (at least mentally) taking part in the academic conversation going on around us all the time. The San Jose Mercury News editorial page is located at http://www.mercurynews.com/opinion.
