Morning Routine: Children put their backpacks and belongings in their locker. They bring their take home folder and place it in their table's folder holder. They say hello to their classmates and check the white board for their morning to do list and any important announcements.. Our morning routine gives students the time to settle in and get their brains ready to learn!
Morning Meeting: We begin our day on the rug with morning meeting. During morning meeting the children learn about each other and build a classroom community. Morning meeting is broken into 4 parts: a greeting, sharing, a group activity and today's forecast (which is a preview of the day).
Phonics: During our phonics lesson we focus on whichever phonics skill the class is working on. During phonics we work on encoding, decoding, dictations, punctuation and other phonics skills! During phonics we often use white boards and magnet letters to make words.
Reader's Workshop: During reader's workshop your child will participate in literature circle. Your child will read a chapter book with their classmates. During their book group time I will guide the students in a discussion on the book. During book groups your child will work on their comprehension by practicing making inferences and answering deeper level thinking questions. When your child is not meeting with their book group, they will engage in independent reading and other engaging reading activities that align with the curriculum.
Snack and Morning Recess: At 10:30 the children eat snack and then head outside for morning recess.
Math Workshop: The students investigate math concepts through hands on activities and challenging activities that promote critical thinking skills. We always end our math lessons with a class discussion about math strategies or skill that the students used that day.
Writing: We start writing with a short lesson to introduce the skill we will be working on. After the mini lesson the students independently work on their writing. During writer's workshop students are planning, writing, revising and adding to their stories!
Lunch/Recess: The children eat lunch at 1:00 everyday. After lunch they will have recess.
Dismissal: Third graders will meet their adult in the back of the school building at 2:50
