Consider these fundamental advice for storing wine, and you'll always be rewarded with perfectly aged wine!!!
The right temperature is crucial for proper wine aging. The temperature for red wine needs to be 55-59 degrees Fahrenheit. We store our wine at 59 degrees as it allows the wine to mature and grow in complexity at a slightly faster pace. Furthermore, storing wine at this temperature helps reduces the electricity bill substantially.
Storing wine at high temperature (+70 degrees) can impair the wine very fast, especially during times when temperature fluctuate rapidly over the course of a day.
Our wine storage cabinets and cellars helps for an optimum wine aging environment as it keeps the temperature in a preset, and stable condition, which greatly enhance your wine investment. As a bonus, 59 degrees happens to be optimum storage conditions for serving chocolate, so I stash a few chocolate bars in my wine cabinet.
50-70% humidity is the ideal. Humidity that is too high tend to promote mold to develop inside the cabinet. Too low, and the corks dry out, allowing air into the bottle, and spoil the wine. Our Breezaire cooling unit maintains the ideal humidity, and does not require any special maintenance.
Placing your wine cellar, or wine cabinet in a relatively cool part of the house where there is little temperature fluctuation, and where there is no direct sunlight upon the cabinet is ideal. Not only is this the ideal environment for your wine, but it also reduces the work that the coolant unit has to perform, resulting in energy saving and extending the life of the cooling unit as well.
While many choose to place their wine cellar in their garage, we would suggest this only as a last resort, or if the garage is well insulated against the outside environment. High temperature and high variance forces the coolant unit to constantly have to run, which reduces its lifespan. If you have to store in such extreme conditions, we suggest opting for a more powerful coolant unit.
All cooling units produce some noise and vibration. While this never bothers us, it is something to consider when considering placing your wine cabinet in your bedroom, or in a library. Placing your wine cabinet on a rug or a vibration pad will virtually eliminate any vibration.
We place our wine cabinet right in our living room. It looks great, impresses your guests, and there's always delicious wine right where it is most often enjoyed. The living is often the area of the house where noise and vibration make little to no impact, just something to think about
