Preparing for 3rd Grade

Here are some activities to help you prepare for 3rd grade!

Math

To help prepare for 3rd grade, here are some fun videos and a game to play for multiplication facts! For now, I have started multiplication practice by 1, 2, 5, and 10's because these are ones you'll be more familiar with because we have practiced skip counting these. You didn't even know you were already practicing for multiplication! ☺️

Making Groups is a great strategy tp help you solve multiplication problems!

Example Below: 3 X 2-

The 3 is how many groups: draw big circles to show your groups.

The 2 is how many in each group: draw little circles, triangles, squares (whatever shape you like in the big circles.

Lastly, you add up what is in the big circles and that is your answer!

Check out the G.E.T poster!

Arrays- we have practiced this!

You can make groups using arrays too! Instead of drawing big circles, you turn them into rows. In this example you have 3 ROWS with 2 in EACH ROW.

Repeated Addition- you know this too!

You can use repeated addition to solve multiplication problems. Take the first number and repeat as many times as the second number says.

Multiply by 1

A number times 1 is still that number!

Multiply by 2

Remember with 2's you DOUBLE the number.

Example: 2 X 4 is 4 doubled (4 +4) = 8!

Multiply by 5

When you multiply by 5 you SKIP COUNT by 5's!

Multiply by 10

When you multiply by 10, you SKIP COUNT by 10's!

Math Magician!

Play Math Magician to practice your math facts! BUT I would like you to practice them in order.

  • 1's

  • 2's

  • 5's

  • 10's

When you are really good at one then you can move onto the next and so on. If you get really good at all of these then you can try the rest in order! (3, 4,6,7,8,9)
