As you walk along the bank of the American River, you'll see a little place with some signs that direct you to the area of the river bank where that gold nugget that James Marshall saw was found. Of course, they don't know EXACTLY where, and even if they did, the land has changed quite a bit over the last 170 plus years! But you can walk down there and check it out. This is what it looks like as you go down to it!
If you get the chance, you should visit this great park! Especially after learning about it in 4th grade Social Studies! There's so much to see and walk around and touch! You can see the place that started the GOLD RUSH in California!
You can walk around and touch a replica of Sutter's Mill. The Mill has been recreated as accurately as possible to give visitors an idea of what the Mill looked like and how it operated.
Since the original Sutter's Mill has long since deteriorated and a replica created further inland for visitors, they created a monument in the place where the original Mill once was. It was located right on the American River! This is what you'll see at the original site.
