Extra Credit Opportunities

Extra Credit Opportunities are provided to students under Mrs. Shaffer's discretion. Students with a plethora of missing work may not be eligible to complete an extra credit opportunity. Check with Mrs. Shaffer and get approval before beginning an extra credit opportunity.

1. Complete a work study in an art-related career with a minimum of 4 hours time expectation. Write a standard 5 paragraph essay about three things you learned during your work study. Also complete a project associated with the career you have chosen to study. Make sure you provide the contact information (full name, title, phone number, email address) for the artist you have followed in your work study for reference.

2. Ask me about community service that will help the arts in Malheur County by volunteering with The Drexel Foundation. Complete community service, document your hours, and provide a reference. Present information about what you did during your community service to the class and encourage your peers to help out. If possible, schedule a time in which other students (and you) can complete more community service as a team.

3. Create a lesson for a kid's art project-- you must have a goal(s) that meets state standards, an outline of the lesson, a materials list, and a means of assessing student work. Correspond with an elementary teacher and set up a time to visit their class and teach your lesson to the students. Make sure your lesson is age-appropriate and that the cooperating teacher has all of the materials necessary for teaching your lesson. Turn in your lesson plan to me, along with photos of student artwork, a reflection of how your lesson went, and a reference.

4. Visit the Boise Art Museum. Take photos as proof that you truly visited. Choose 1 artist whose work you admired and research this artist. Write a short essay about the life of this artist, the artwork, and special recognition given to this artist. Include at least 3 color prints of the artist's work.

5. Visit the Portland Art Museum. Take photos as proof that you truly visited. Choose 1 artist whose work you admired and research this artist. Write a short essay about the life of this artist, the artwork, and special recognition given to this artist. Include at least 3 color prints of the artist's work.

6. Take a walking or driving tour of the murals of Vale. Document your visit to each mural with a photograph including yourself in the photo as proof; print and include in this assignment. Choose one mural that you admire and research the artist/subject matter of the mural. Write a short essay about what you have learned.

7. Visit the bronze sculptures in Joseph, Oregon. Take photos-- include yourself in each image-- of the sculptures; print and include in this assignment. Choose one sculpture that you admire and research the artist you created the piece. Write a short essay about the life of the artist, the artwork, and special recognition given to this artist. Include at least 3 color prints of the artist's work.

8. Walk down Freak Alley in Boise. Document yourself in front of at least 5 art pieces. Choose 1 artwork that you like best. Research the history of Freak Alley, the artist who created the artwork, and explain why this artwork spoke to you-- in short essay form. Then, create your own Freak Alley-inspired artwork that is at least 12 x 16 inches in size.

9. Create a YouTube art tutorial. You can create a video on anything art or craft related. Edit your work, include music, and fast-forward through long parts. Make sure you are giving clear directions. Show me your video-- maybe I will steal it for a lesson for class!

10. Collaborate with Mrs. Shaffer and local businesses to paint their windows for the holidays or special Nyssa events (Homecoming, state playoffs, Thunderegg Days, rodeo, etc.) Paint at least 3 large windows to earn extra credit. Take images of yourself with your finished products. You will need to provide your own paint and brushes for this project.Â
