Second Step is a curriculum focused on social emotional learning. This year we have four units of study: Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotion Management, and Problem Solving. Throughout the year, your child will be bringing home Home Links that go with several of the Second Step lessons. These home links are simple, fun activities for you and your child to complete. My hope is that these critical life skills will transfer to the home as well!
Even though your child is independently and fluently reading chapter books, it is vitally important for you to continue reading with your child. Not only does reading together provide quality time, but it allows your child to develop vocabulary skills and helps strengthen reading comprehension. Also, as students read more books geared towards middle childhood, the themes become harder to navigate. Sharing a book together provides you with an opportunity to discuss challenging topics.
There are several resources available to help your child with Math homework:
GreatMinds.org is a great website provides parent tip sheets, but will require a (free) login.
Duane Habacker has a short video for each lesson and each module of Eureka Math. Simply search for him on YouTube.
Mandy Walker has also created short videos for each second and third grade lesson of Eureka Math. Search for her by lesson on YouTube or for her complete playlist, click here.
You can order books online through Scholastic! Our class activation code is GKMNT.
Near your child's birthday (or half birthday for summer birthdays), the class will write letters to your child. Your child will receive this book of letters on or near his or her birthday (or half birthday). Your child will also receive a gift from me. While some families enjoy providing goody bags or treats to celebrate a birthday, it is completely optional. If you do choose to provide treats, please make sure they are peanut and tree nut free (i.e. no hazelnut or Nutella). We will enjoy goody bags or treats near the end of the day.
