Back to School Night is THIS Thursday! The schedule for Thursday is as follows:
6:00 - 6:30 pm: Presentation of younger grades (TK-2nd grades)
6:30 - 6:45 pm: HSC Presentation (Barracuda Tank)
6:45 - 7:15 pm: Presentation of upper grades (3rd-5th grades)
Please join me from 6:45-7:15 pm in Room 5. I will share more about my teaching philosophy, information about our year-long curriculum, and what homework will look like this year. You will also hear from our resident teacher, Revathy Srinivasan. This is a night for parents only.
Last week students learned about the states in the Southwest region (only 4 states) and played a spirited Jeopardy game to review what we learned. On Monday, students will take a short quiz to see if they can identify the states, capitals, and state abbreviations in this region. This week we will learn about the Western states.
This week students will continue in the Earth Science unit Earth and Sun that we began last week. Students have learned that Earth's atmosphere is a mixture of gases with properties that change with distance above Earth's surface. This week students will design and conduct an experiment to investigate the effects of sunlight on different earth materials. If you would like to extend student learning at home, consider trying this home school connection activity.
Last week we started a novel study based on the book Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea. It's the story of a new fifth-grade teacher and seven of his students. Each section focuses on a different month of the school year, and each chapter is told through the voice of one of the seven students. It's a wonderful story about friendship, mentorship, overcoming adversity, and more. This week we read the September and October sections. Students will be taking a quiz on the reading from each week so that I can monitor their understanding of the story. Be sure to ask your child what he or she thinks of the book, and be on the lookout for the quizzes in upcoming Thursday envelopes!

Our class thrives with parent volunteers! Please complete this form to let me know if you are interested in helping out in the classroom this year.
This form also asks your preferences on format and time for the October conferences. Note that October conferences will be held October 7-15. After I have an idea of how many families prefer particular times of the day, I will create a sign up form.
We are currently in module 1, which focuses on place value to the thousandths place. Students will deepen their knowledge through a more generalized understanding of the relationships between and among adjacent places on the place value chart. Resources for Eureka Math unit 1 (including downloadable homework pages and parent tip sheets) can be found online here.
We have PE weekly on Tuesday mornings from 8:20 - 9:05 am with Miss Kelly (our new PE teacher). On Tuesdays, please make sure your child is wearing shoes in which they can run. I also recommend a hat and an extra water bottle for hot days.

This year, we will be managing some assignments and hand outs (such as study guides) on Google Classroom. Students will learn how to access Google Classroom this week.
