This unit explores the Challenges of Change.

Essential Question:

• How can changes in surroundings help develop a person or character?
• How does society influence a person’s development?

Overview:

Students further explore the concept of change through the exploration of how external changes can affect the internal character. When students recognize that even challenging changes can produce positive results, they can face challenges with a new and positive perspective and can understand that change is not a bad thing. Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan has been chosen as the primary text in this unit because it provides the opportunity for students to explore the narrative elements while analyzing how societal change affects the mood of the story and the development of the character.
