Overview:
Students build on their knowledge from elementary school by starting the year exploring the concept of change. When students better understand how others have faced conflict and change, they can develop skills and make balanced decisions to overcome the challenges they will face in their lives. The Cay by Theodore Taylor has been chosen as the primary text in this unit. Reading this novel provides the opportunity for students to explore the narrative elements while analyzing how the relationships shared by the major characters and the changes they experience, both internal and external, have a significant effect on them. The Cay provides opportunities to explore the nuances involved for both those characters in the process of receiving help to meet adversity and those who are attempting to help others.
