Engineering and architecture are considered STEM occupations because practitioners are trained in and use multidisciplinary skills in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). STEM occupations are growing rapidly and have higher average incomes compared to non-STEM occupations.
The occupational fields of engineering and architecture are expected to grow nationally by 4% between 2018 and 2028.
Environmental engineers are expected to grow between 4-6% throughout the US and by 8% in California in the same time period. In May of 2019 the median annual wage for environmental engineers was $88,860 or $47.72/hour. In California, the median wage for environmental engineers is $102,100 or $49.09/hour.
