All assignments can be found and completed in Google Classroom. For excused absences, students have as many days as they were absent to complete missing assignments. For late work, students can complete assignments only for the current quarter up until two weeks before the quarter grading period.
Unit 1: Politics of Food Unit
The purpose of this unit is to introduce students to rhetoric and how writers integrate rhetorical elements to their writing. In this unit, students will learn about the politics in the food industry and analyze how authors integrate rhetorical elements in their writing.
Unit 2: Argument Writing Focus
The purpose of this unit is to introduce them to argumentative writing. Students will learn how authors integrate rhetorical methods to persuade their audiences.
Unit 3: Technology
The purpose of this unit is to help students form arguments using evidence from credible sources to support their position. Students will write a synthesis essay at the end of this unit.
Unit 4: Rhetoric of Op-Ed
The purpose of this unit is to help students use the three Aristotelian appeals of ethos, logos, and pathos to evaluate the rhetoric of editorials and opinion (op-ed). Students will write rhetorical analysis paragraphs throughout this unit.
Unit 5: Synthesis Essay Writing Focus
The purpose of this unit is to expose students to the craft of synthesis essay writing. Throughout this unit, students will learn how to scan texts to help them identify textual evidence to support their defensible thesis statements.
Unit 6: Civil Disobedience
The purpose of this unit is to continue working on rhetoric by having students analyze historical speeches and essays. Students will write on-demand rhetorical analysis essays. The culminating task for this unit will be a synthesis essay where students take a stand on a prompt.
Unit 7: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
The purpose of this unit is to frontload concepts and assignments students will be expected to do in AP English Literature and Composition and/or the literary analysis essay if students take English 1A

Throughout this course, students will be examining multiple perspectives and complex views to help them research and analyze how writers use rhetoric to persuade their audience; therefore, some of the content students will read will push their thinking and at times may make them uncomfortable. At all times, students must exhibit mature behavior, respect for the opposing side, and a willingness to learn and grow as an individual. Bullying or mean-spirited behavior will not be tolerated. The classroom environment is meant to be open to an exchange of dialogue from all sides therefore personal attacks, judgmental remarks aimed at specific groups or individuals, and/or discriminatory statements are not only inappropriate, they will not be tolerated. Keeping this in mind, class discussions, assignments, and behavior will be composed and academic.
To help prepare students for the AP exam, Mrs. Gonzalez will lead test prep sessions every Monday during class. Students who wish to spend additional time preparing for the AP Exam may use the AP Test Prep Linktree curated by Mrs. Gonzalez to help students practice during their own time.
