Ever wish your kiddos had a user’s manual for their brain? With this book, you can start them talking about dendrites and amygdalas before you can say neurotransmitter.
Plus, it helps children understand why they sometimes “act without thinking” and what they can do about it.
Our journey begins by exploring brain cells, the nervous system, and the eight (yes, eight!) senses.
From there, we learn about how the brain develops, from Downstairs Brain to Upstairs Brain.
Sitting between the two is Amygdala, the almond-shaped, well-meaning traffic controller who sometimes sees danger everywhere and calls in the Downstairs Brain heroes.
We discover that while Amygdala just wants to keep us safe, we can learn strategies to help it relax so our Upstairs Brain can handle problems calmly.
🤩 Rodney's review:
“The drawings in this book are awesome – it’s like reading a big comic! My favorite character was Amygdala — he sees danger everywhere and really wants to help, even if he does tend to overreact. Thankfully, the book shares a three-step plan (A - A quick pause, B - Be curious, C - Choose wisely) we can use to give Amygdala a
chance to calm down before we act. I’m might try that myself! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐”
I was a little skeptical at first because of all the brain science terms packed into the first few pages, but the engaging story and creative characters quickly won me over. Most importantly, the book helps kids see that self-regulation is something they can practice and grow — one thought at a time.
