TK - Kindergarten Spelling & Reading Foundations
What Kindergarteners Should Know - Kindergarten lays the foundation for all future reading and spelling. By the end of the year, most students should have a strong understanding of sounds, letters, and early word building.
Phonemic Awareness
These are the listening skills children need before they can begin spelling words.
Hear and identify beginning, middle, and ending sounds
Blend sounds to make words
Segment words into individual sounds
Manipulate sounds (change /c/ in cat to /h/ → hat)
These skills are essential because children must be able to hear sounds before they can spell them.
Letter–Sound Knowledge
These are the building blocks children use to connect the sounds they hear to the letters they see.

This is the foundation for decoding and early spelling.
Early Decoding Skills
These skills show that children can take what they know about sounds and letters and begin turning them into real words.

Begin reading decodable sentences

Early Spelling Skills
