3rd Grade — California Common Core Standards
These are the California Common Core standards for Third-Grade reading, spelling, and foundational skills, rewritten in clear, parent‑friendly language.
Reading Foundational Skills (RF.3)
Third graders move beyond basic phonics and begin applying advanced decoding and spelling strategies to read longer, more complex words. They should be able to:
Read multisyllabic words using syllable division
Apply knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, and base words
Use spelling patterns to read and write unfamiliar words
Read grade‑level text with accuracy and appropriate rate
Self‑correct when something doesn’t look or sound right
These skills help students transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.”
Phonics & Word Recognition (RF.3.3)
Students use advanced phonics patterns and morphology to read and spell longer words. They should be able to:
Identify and use common prefixes (un‑, re‑, pre‑, mis‑)
Identify and use common suffixes (‑ful, ‑less, ‑able, ‑ment, ‑tion)
Break words into meaningful parts (base word + affixes)
Read and spell multisyllabic words (fantastic, remember, complete)
Apply spelling rules for vowel teams, r‑controlled vowels, and consonant patterns
This is the year morphology becomes a major tool for reading and spelling.
Fluency (RF.3.4)
Students read longer passages with accuracy, expression, and understanding. They should be able to:
Read grade‑level text with purpose
Adjust reading rate for different types of text
Use punctuation to guide phrasing
Reread to improve accuracy and comprehension
Fluency supports comprehension across all subjects.
Language Standards (L.3.2)
Students apply spelling, grammar, and writing conventions to communicate clearly. They should be able to:
Use correct capitalization and punctuation
Form and use regular and irregular plural nouns
Use commas in addresses and dialogue
Spell grade‑appropriate words using patterns and word parts
Use reference materials (glossaries, dictionaries) to check spelling
These skills support both writing and vocabulary development.
Vocabulary & Word Learning (L.3.4–L.3.6)
Students expand vocabulary by analyzing word parts and using context clues. They should be able to:
Determine word meaning using prefixes, suffixes, and base words
Use context clues to understand unfamiliar words
Distinguish shades of meaning among related words
Use academic vocabulary in speaking and writing
This prepares students for the heavier reading load in upper elementary.
What This Means for Your Child
Third grade is a turning point. Students who master multisyllabic decoding, morphology, and spelling patterns become confident, independent readers. They can tackle longer texts, understand new vocabulary, and write with clarity. Students who struggle with these skills often find 4th‑grade reading and writing increasingly challenging because the vocabulary and text complexity jump significantly.
Strong 3rd‑grade foundational skills set your child up for success in every subject.
