I developed this lesson plan for my special education student teaching experience in the fall of 2023. The social studies lesson was taught in a 1:1 setting with a student with a cognitive disability. Throughout the semester I continued to ensure that I was being intentional about the instructional methods as a taught the student to meet their learning needs. Within this lesson, I considered the varying factors that affect instructional time with a student with a cognitive disability. However, the student continues to demonstrate understanding as I continue to bring content to her level of access. The objective for this lesson was to help the student understand the various branches of government, specifically the Executive Branch . I continued to incorporate annotating and frequent checks for understanding by asking questions to keep the student engaged. As I taught this lesson, I used explicit directions. Throughout the lesson and every lesson, I exercise patience, reassurance, and positive reinforcement towards the student.
I developed this lesson plan for my general education student teaching experience in the fall of 2023. The social studies lesson was designed for whole class instruction. The objective of the lesson was to be able to summarize key facts and locate Europe, North America, and South America on a map. Students explored new information as they used multiple modalities to access the content such as visual and audio. Throughout the lesson, I engaged students through choral reading and moments to share with the class their ideas. I learned that it is very important to state clear directions and expectations when teaching a class in a whole group setting.
I developed this lesson plan for my special education student teaching experience in the fall of 2023. The reading lesson was taught in a 1:1 setting with a student with a cognitive disability. I made sure that I was being intentional about the instructional methods as a taught the student to meet their learning needs. The objective for this lesson was to teach the concept of main and supporting details to help understand a story. I actively incorporated annotating and frequent checks for understanding by asking questions to keep the student engaged. As I taught this lesson, I had to remain explicit in my directions and in the lesson to ensure that the student fully understood the lesson as a whole. I learned it is important to be concise in my verbiage when communicating to a student with such delays. Throughout the lesson, I exercised patience, reassurance, and positive reinforcement towards the student.
I developed this lesson plan for my spring 2023 level III field experience in 2nd grade. The objective of this lesson was to teach students to use details such as images and words to identify a stories central message or theme. I constructed a lesson that was geared toward whole group reading instruction. My lesson was focused on the unit of studies essential question, "What do good citizens do?". Throughout the lesson I drew student's attention to ways the main character was modeling being a good citizen. I also facilitated discussion of the stories lesson or theme with the students. I thought my choice of an exit ticket was a good way to assess student learning because it allowed for them to share specific takeaways from the story. I learned that it is important to be flexible in a whole group lesson as discussion is fluid and does not always follow the formality of a lesson plan.
K-8 Math Methods
I developed this lesson plan for K-8 Math Methods class. I didn't teach this lesson to a 2nd grade class, however, I did learn about the important components that lay a solid foundation for a successful math lesson plan. A takeaway that I had while preparing this lesson was to connect the math content to meaningful context and provide students with ways to make sense of the instruction. I was also able to explore the math curriculum, Open-Up Resources, while developing this lesson plan. I learned that it is crucial to implement the standards and create lesson objectives that align with the content and math practice standards. Furthermore, when lesson planning considering how to assess all students is important as it shows I am considering my learners progress and how to best prepare or remediate the lesson.
