Practice over 2-3 days (day 1 is reading and outlining, day 2 is drafting)
Make EOC B the final exam (our final exam length is 90 minutes, so it's perfect)
Head up to the school on a Sunday afternoon, order some pizzas, and practice both EOC A and EOC B about 2 weeks before the actual exam. Best practice ever.
Exam structure (Part A = 30 min, Part B = 90 min)
Day 1
Take 2-3 minutes- break down sample prompt from 2018 exam, just EOC B, marking key words and phrases:
Take 30 minutes and read (thoroughly annotating) the 4 source pieces
Discuss common threads / themes that connect the sources as a class
If absent: print, read, and annotate the 4 sources, identify connecting themes and individual perspectives
Day 2
Based on yesterday’s source breakdown, take 25-30 minutes and create a detailed outline (including textual examples)
Write an introductory paragraph that addresses the prompt
If absent: complete the above tasks
Day 3
In groups, evaluate sample essays (3) in a round-table rotation, making note of reasons for high scores in each rubric row
If absent: get packet from me with sample essays and notation sheet / complete individually
Day 4
Class discussion: sample essay scores and potential challenges for this section / strategies for overcoming those challenges
If absent: make a list of potential challenges and possible strategies for tackling this section
Day 5:
Read the Part A source for 2018, "The Neuroscience of Your Brain on Fiction"
Mark all claims with "C" and evidence with "E"
Days 6-7:
Complete the Part A Practice Document
