Please use this area to your advantage as it explains directions for some assignments in further detail. It also breaks down rubrics and offers study guides for exams. How to succeed in this course:

• Keep translator use out of your submissions.

• Use your vocabulary from your lessons (if I see words outside of the vocabulary you should know or are learning, points may be deducted). Keep a running list of the vocabulary on a Google doc, written in your notebook, or on a printed list so that you can easily refer to it when completing assignments.

• Write BASIC sentences. If you do not know how to say something, don't say it. Focus on what you know in Spanish!

• Ask questions if you get stuck! I'm here to assist you.

• Always aim for the upper end of the time requirement for the Speaking Assignments - you will earn more quality points. For example, the directions say "Record your discussion for 1 to 2 minutes" - try your best to discuss the topic for 2 minutes! If you have fully answered the question and you have not met the lower time requirement, expand on the topic - answer the "who, when, why, where, what, how" of the scenario OR throw in your own personal thoughts! How do you relate to this topic?

Note about Literature Highlights --> Important! Please read!

This upper level Spanish class gives you the wonderful opportunity to see into the hearts and minds of some of Latin America’s greatest thinkers and writers. As you embark on reading and understanding these challenging literary works, I encourage you to enjoy the flow and beauty of the words and images. Read the poetry aloud. Hear and feel the rhythm and rhyme!

Yes, you will come across many, many words that you don’t understand as have I. I suggest you look up several words in the dictionary and include them in your own word bank of new vocabulary. Don’t worry about understanding the entire passage; that is not the point of the assignments. The purpose is to expose you to the authors, the literary works and the culture that come along with it.

Each assignment is worth between 15 -20 points.Be sure to answer with complete thoughts and sentences. Please use your own words and grammar knowledge to the best of your ability. Don’t give into the pressure to use online translators. They are not to be used in this course, except for looking up a word or two. Use your best punctuation, capitalizing the first word of each sentence and proper nouns. Use the ñ and accent marks as needed.

If you are answering a poetry prompt, I suggest you include a line or phrase from the passage and then tell why the phrase supports your opinions and answer. I am available to help you with these assignments as well.

What to do for Reading Comprehension Assignments:

• Use complete sentences

• Write in Spanish

• Use the words in the question to formulate your answer (no need to look up a different way to say things)

You will be graded on:

• having three characteristics about each person (five people in total)

I use the following rubric to grade this assignment which should be completed in Spanish:

• length (5 pts) - 5/5 (30 seconds or more), 4/5 (25-29 seconds), 3/5 (20-24 seconds), 2/5 (15-19 seconds), 1/5 (less than 15 seconds)

• English words used (5 pts) - minus one point for every occurrence

• information provided (5 pts) - at least five different facts/pieces of information are provided

• accuracy/pronunciation (5 pts) - 5/5 (0-3 errors), 4/5 (4-6 errors), 3/5 (7-9 errors), 2/5 (10-12 errors), 1/5 (more than 12 errors)

UNIT 3

I use the following rubric to grade this assignment which should be completed in Spanish:

  • What do you think about how Christmas is celebrated in Latin America? (expand by discussing specific traditions)

  • What's a special celebration in your culture/country? What is it called/how do you celebrate it?

• quality/effort (5 pts) - this is an average of your three categories above/meeting the length requirement of at least 6 complete sentences (two paragraphs)

UNIT 8

Body Parts and Medical Words Part 4. Realia: Sick Note

I use the following rubric to grade this assignment which should be completed in Spanish. The following items should be included:

• Note written in excuse form: 2 points

• What illness you had: 2 points

• What you had to do to get better: 2 points

• Things you could not do while sick: 2 points

• Effort (spelling/grammar): 2 points (-1 for every 5 errors)

UNIT 9

Quarter 1 Exam Review Part 2, Culture Summary

I'm looking for the following items to be included in this summary which should be written in Spanish - at least one paragraph (3 sentences):

• mention and discussion of at least two influences of Spanish culture in your own culture (food, music, dance, lifestyle, practices, traditions, etc). These should be specific - you should expand beyond saying "We have food, music, and dance in common" - What foods? What music? What types of dance? How are the similar?: 4 points

• grammar/spelling: 3 points (-1 for every two errors)

• effort: 3 points (at least three complete sentences are shared that meet the topic requirements)

*Every answer should be written in the present perfect (haber + past participle). If you do not remember what the present perfect looks like, check your notes, go back through your recent lessons, or take a look here.

UNIT 27

Quarter 3 Exam Review Part 2, Conociendo a Antonio Machado

For this submission, I am specifically looking for:

• A paragraph written in Spanish: 3 points

• About how you want to live your life (keeping the poem in mind): 3 points

• And how will you leave footprints (specific things you will do in your career, with your friends/family, in your community, etc.): 3 points

• grammar/spelling: 1 point (-1 if more than 5 errors)

Quarter 3 Exam Part 2, Culture Reflection

For this assignment, you will be graded in this way:

• length (2-3 paragraphs of discussion): 3 points

• discussion of at least two specific influences of Peru OR Costa Rica in your own culture (You need to expand on this to earn all credit - give examples): 4 points

• grammar/spelling: 3 points

UNIT 28

Common "ar" Verbs Part 4, ¿Qué están desarrollando los científicos?

This is how you will be graded on this assignment which should be completed in Spanish:

• summary of article: 3 points

• five progressive verbs are used in your summary: 5 points (please click here for a refresher on present progressive tense, you may also use past progressive, if you'd like)

• source is cited (you may copy and paste the website if applicable): 2 points

UNIT 29

Common "er" Verbs Part 4, La Maleta Perdida

• When filling in the missing parts of the conversation, if you see an underlined word, you should use the passive voice (Look back at Unit 29, Common "er" Verbs Part 3). If you see a word in English, you should write the Spanish equivalent from your recent vocabulary list (Look back at Unit 29, Common "er" Verbs Part 1) and leave it in the infinitive (unchanged form of the verb).

Common "ir" Verbs Review and Quiz, Speaking Quiz

• • I'm looking for you to give at least five reasons why the subjunctive is used - take some time to review your notes and your lessons from this past week. If you need extra assistance, this is a great spot that reviews the subjunctive mood and provides you with the acronym "W.E.I.R.D.O." for reasons why the subjunctive is used (5 points)

  • I'm also looking for you to give five example sentences in Spanish of the subjunctive mood - these should be of your own creation (5 points)

  • I'm listening for the clarification of your ideas and correct pronunciation (5 points)

UNIT 36

Semester 2 Exam Review Part 2, Culture Report

For this assignment, you will be graded according to the following rubric:

• information is taken from lessons and one source: 2 points - source is cited (copy and paste website where information was retrieved)

• at least 2-3 paragraphs: 3 points

• a significant event, movement, historical figure from Peru, Costa Rica, Bolivia, or Argentina is the main focus of this summary: 3 points

• discussion of what you personally learned or realized: 2 points

Semester 2 Exam Review Part 3, Enhance Your Career

For this assignment, I'm looking for the following items:

• essay length (at least 6 sentences): 3 points

• at least two advantages of knowing Spanish in a social work career are shared: 2 points

• what to expect from taking a Spanish class: 2 points

• share what experiences made you want to study Spanish personally: 2 points

• grammar and vocabulary: 1 point
