This is a tutorial to help teachers get their classes in Khan Academy and link the students to the teacher.
Go to www.khanacademy.org or just click the link. The homepage should look like:
As you can see, you will have three options, learners, teachers, and parents. In this case, we will want to choose the "Teachers start here" option
When you have clicked that option, you will now be brought to a page that looks like this:
On this page, you will want to click continue with google, since google manages our school email accounts. This will also be very helpful if you have created your classes in google classroom.
If you are currently logged into your school account, and have been to khan academy before, you will see the screenshot on the right. At this point you just need to add a new class, which I detail for new teachers later in this tutorial if you have forgotten.
But if you are following this tutorial, it is probably because you have not been to khan academy before, so let's continue there. If you have not logged into google, you will see:
Go ahead and log into your account, and if this is your first time to khan academy, you will need to allow permission for khan academy to access your google account. Go ahead and click allow.
That should bring you to the welcome screen of the new Khan Academy teacher dashboard. You will want to click "create a class to get started", where you will need to name your class. Here is where the option to import your class from google classroom is one route to go. I will assume you have NOT put your class roster into a google classroom for the purpose of this tutorial, since as of now, none of our department uses google classroom, and instead we use schoology. Go ahead and name your class.
Next it will need you to add subjects to your class. Browse the list, and choose the subject area you will want your students primarily working in when they are using Khan Academy. For the purpose of this tutorial, I will set up an Algebra 2 course, which also needs to be an SAT prep class. You can choose more than subject option, so first choose Algebra 2, and then scroll down and choose SAT prep.
When you click next, Khan Academy will now need you to add students. It again will give you the option to import from google classroom, but it will also post a "class code" which allows us to have our classes log in with on their chromebooks. The final step to set up the teacher side is after you click next it will ask you to find your school by your zip code: 60417. After you have typed it in, use the scroll down feature to choose Crete Monee High School.
Now it offers you the ability to assign some content or go view your class. Let's go view our class so we can see student join our class to ensure they are all on our roster. Scroll down and choose: Go to my class.
You will now see a nice layout of class options, including all the curriculum in one of the content areas you chose for your class. Please browse all that curriculum later to get familiar with it. But for now we want to make sure our roster is correct and students are getting enrolled in your class. So click roster to see who is in, which is probably no one at this point. Please direct the students to my student tutorial to join Khan Academy now, and if they follow the directions, they will get logged into your class roster correctly, thanks!
Keep refreshing the roster page as your students are logging in and you can ensure all of your students are in Khan Academy. Once they are, you can start assigning content material, videos, and practice areas for your students. Good luck, and I hope you take advantage of this great resource!
