Math 8
Course Description
The Math 8 course was designed with the areas of focus for grade 8 Mathematics as identified by the NJ Student Learning Standards. Grade 8 Mathematics will move the students from the concepts developed in grades 6 and 7, modeling relationships with variables and equations and ratio and proportional reasoning, to making connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations. The idea of a function is introduced as a precursor to functions concepts that are included in the high school standards.
Unit 1 presents the geometric concepts that establish the groundwork to work with equations of lines in the coordinate plane and includes slope, y-intercept, and proportional relationships.
Unit 2 addresses irrational numbers which the students may encounter in their work with functions, expressions and equations.
Unit 3 and Unit 4 work deepens students’ understanding of algebraic concepts and provides foundational skills necessary for the standards presented in the high school mathematics courses. The focus in Unit 3 is Geometry, specifically transformations, and the changes on a coordinate plane. Scatterplots and probability are studied in Unit 4.
District Grading Policy
Homework: 10% of final grade.
Homework will be assessed based on the effort put into an entire assignment, not the accuracy of the answers provided.
Classwork: 30% of final grade.
Participation: 15% of final grade. This grade will be assigned based on the following categories:
Preparation for class
Frequency of participation and impact on completion of class activities
Focused/On task during activities, attention and respect to others
Application of topic concepts and related academic language
Summative Assignments: 45% of final grade.
