Chapter 7 – Absolute Value and Reciprocal Functions
7.1 Absolute Value
o I can determine the absolute values of numbers and expressions.
o I can explain how the distance between two points on a number line can be expressed in terms of absolute value.
o I can compare and order the absolute values of real numbers in a given set.
7.2 Absolute Value Functions
o I can create a table of values for y=|f(x)|, given a table of values for y=f(x).
o I can sketch the graph of y=|f(x)| and determine its intercept(s), domain, and range.
o I can generalize a rule for writing absolute value functions in piecewise notation.
7.3 Absolute Value Equations
o I can solve an absolute value equation graphically, with or without technology.
o I can algebraically solve an equation with a single absolute value and verify the solution.
o I can explain why the absolute value equation |f(x)| = b for b<0 has no solution.
7.4 Reciprocal Functions
o I can graph the reciprocal of a given function.
o I can analyze the graph of the reciprocal of a given function.
o I can compare the graph of a function to the graph of the reciprocal of that function.
I can identify the values of x for which the graph of has vertical asymptotes
