Welcome to Math 8 Honours / Accelerated! HONOURS means that one focus of our class is to provide enrichment with topics outside of the regular school curriculum, including problem solving and math contests. Enrichment means that students are expected to not only work hard at math, but to enjoy that work. ACCELERATED means that another focus of our class is to cover the regular school curriculum faster, so that you are able to complete all of Math 8 and a portion of Math 9 this year. Successful students will be encouraged to take Math 9 Honours next year, where they will complete Math 9 and portion of Foundations and Pre-Calculus 10 by the end of grade 9. Mathematical knowledge, attitudes, and skills create opportunities for and enrich the lives of us all.
Keys to Success:
I am looking forward to working with each student to meet the challenges of this course! I will do everything I can but the biggest part is up to each student.
Here are the keys to success:
Set a goal and expect to achieve it.
Be ready and willing to learn.
Ask questions if you do not yet understand.
Complete all assigned practice.
Big Ideas in Math 8:
§ Number represents, describes, and compares the quantities of ratios, rates, and percent.
§ Computational fluency and flexibility extend to operations with fractions.
§ Discrete linear relationships can be represented in many connected ways and used to identify and make generalizations.
§ The relationship between surface area and volume of 3D objects can be used to describe, measure, and compare spatial relationships.
§ Analyzing data by determining averages is one way to make sense of large data sets and enables us to compare and interpret.
Curricular Competencies
The following Curricular competencies will be covered and assists in Math 8H:
v Reasoning and Analyzing
v Understanding and solving
v Communicating and representing
v Connecting and reflecting
The grading will be based on BC’s 4- point proficiency scale below:
