The University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School - Pre College Academy is a three week, accelerated program introducing high school students to different areas of law. In the first two weeks I learned in depth about constitutional law, criminal law, torts, and contracts. In the third week I was introduced briefly to other specialized fields of law such as immigration law, environmental law, and intellectual property law.
Another significant part of the program is preparing a mock Supreme Court Oral Argument in front of a judge. For my personal oral argument, I represented the petitioner, Grants Pass, in the Supreme Court case Grants Pass v Johnson.
Further, we also went on several field trips in this program. We went to the United States District Court for the Eastern State of Pennsylvania, the Eastern State Penitentiary, and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. During this past summer, I worked with the Democracy Summer program run by Congressman Jamie Raskin. In this program, I attended weekly seminars where I, and others high school and college students around the world heard from professionals around the United States. These seminars included topics such as voting rights, the rise of fascism, free speech and disinformation, and gun control.
For the in person portion of this program, I worked for Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon's campaign. With a group of six other Democracy Summer fellows we worked together to canvass for Democrats running for local offices.
