Junior Cycle Science is a 3-year course that blends traditional subjects—biology, chemistry, and physics—with earth and space. Rather than just memorising facts, you will develop scientific literacy and hands-on investigation skills through continuous classroom assessments and a final state examination.
The course content is divided into five main areas:
Nature of Science: The unifying strand that runs through all topics. It teaches you how to design fair tests, graph data, evaluate scientific evidence, and understand how science impacts society.
Biological World: Focuses on life and living things. Key topics include cells, human body systems (digestive, breathing, circulatory), genetics, biodiversity, and ecology.
Chemical World: Explores the building blocks of matter. You will study the periodic table, atomic structure, states of matter, mixtures, compounds, and reactions.
Physical World: Covers forces, energy, and motion. Main areas of study include speed, acceleration, electricity, magnetism, heat transfer, and wave energy.
Earth and Space: Looks at the structure of Earth, the rock cycle, the atmosphere, and our solar system's place in the broader universe.
