Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching in the online platform has limited the number of available student-teaching positions where I could continue developing my craft. Located in the East Bay, this semester had me working with the majority of their 8th grade students. 5 classes of about 30-34 students.
In April 2021, Canyon Middle School opened up their campus following the hybrid model protocols. Half of the students come on campus twice a week for 3 hours a day. Then the other half come on a different two days. Students attend classes asynchronously on Wednesdays. Logistically, managing both groups of students at the same time was a challenge. We created similar lessons online for both but students in-class would work off of their whiteboards and share their work with one another.
The primary way of teaching lessons was by using the Desmos online platform. I was able to customize lessons for the subject matter and provided students access to all of the online material. I also coded many of the activities to be self-checking, allowing students to receive immediate feedback when they've answered the questions.
The Green Check mark is the self-checking feature that provides students with feedback to reinforce their conceptual understanding.
