No Excuse Errors is a set of basic expectations that Key Middle School teachers maintain for all written work.
- Capitalize the first word in each sentence.
- Capitalize proper nouns.
- Write in complete sentences.
- Use proper end of sentence punctuation.
- Correctly spell common words.
- Indent the first sentence of each paragraph.
Be careful when you are using the first person.
- "Everyone should vote" is more persuasive than "I think everyone should vote."
Avoid repeating a word within a single sentence or paragraph.
- Many commonly used words have several or more synonyms. Use variety to impress your reader. Using a thesaurus is encouraged!
Don't frustrate your reader with repetitive or redundant phrases.
- For example, the Declaration of Independence says we have an unalienable right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Once you have written this in your essay, you can simply refer to "these rights" anytime afterwards.
Read your writing in your mind or out loud. Does it flow?
- If not, check for fragments, run-ons, and punctuation errors.
- Start and finish one thought in one sentence and flow to the next sentence.
