CML Frequently Asked Questions
What is CML?
Continental Math League is a competition in which Bernards Township Schools participates. It’s a national competition which consists of 5 tests with 6 questions each. Each school has provided the test dates and location on their form sent home. The competition is open to any fourth or fifth grade student who wishes to participate. Students will take the grade level appropriate test. We participate in the Grade 4 Euclidean and Grade 5 Euclidean divisions.
How is it conducted?
Students have 30 minutes to complete the test. A teacher at each school proctors the test which means handing out the test and then scoring them. A copy with the answer key is provided after the tests are scored.
How is it scored and how does the competition run?
After each test, the top scores for each grade (4th and 5th) are submitted to CML. If a student scores 30 points in total after the last test, they are a national winner and receive a medal from CML. If our school team by grade level is the highest in our designated region, we receive a certificate for the team.
How can I prepare my child?
A Google search can locate CML questions. The Continental Math League has their own site (www.cmleague.org) that sells books of previous test questions. Please provide your child with sharpened pencils on the day of the test. It is important to have your child arrive on time to the designated location at your school.
All CML experiences are designed to both maximize student opportunities to participate and to improve their problem solving capabilities.
Students will be participating with other students on the same grade level from schools all over the United States.
