"Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, establish and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions." – The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL)
Social and emotional skills are critical to being a good student, citizen, and worker. The goal of teaching social and emotional skills is to support students' mental health and resilience. Learning about SEL allows students to better cope with life challenges and to better navigate their life in our society.
Not only are you trying to figure out how to manage your household, but you are now having to home-school your children! It is difficult enough if you have one child in one school, but if you have several in multiple schools, it can seem very overwhelming. Just remember, it's OKAY to feel this way. It's OKAY to not know. It's OKAY to slowly tackle this. It's truly OKAY.
Turn off the news. If you want to see updates, plan a time to watch them every day (the 5 o'clock news, for example). Have your child do something at that time away from the TV. Children can't interpret news like we can and they can hear something, hang onto that sentence and obsess about it. Don't forget they listen to everything you say when you're on the phone or talking to other adults in the house.
Make a daily schedule. Do you need a fancy calendar? No. You and your children create the schedule together and let them have choices and tell them what is non-negotiable.
