Model United Nations

Course Description:

Model United Nations (MUN) is a course at Liberty High School that offers students the unique opportunity to serve as delegates for the United Nations and work together to solve global issues. If you are interested in debate or learning more about the world, then this is the class for you. As a class, we will seek solutions for injustices through education, debate, and simulations. We will prepare, and even attend, conferences throughout the world. MUN provides students with an opportunity to make the change they want to see. Every issue explored will take us one-step closer, not only to solving the problems of the world, but also to educating and raising awareness in our local and international communities.

MUN Club:

The Liberty MUN Club is still running strong with Mr. Kennedy as the current adviser. The club meets on Monday's after school in Kennedy's room. Club officers include Tatum Lindquist, Alex Diamond, Karinn Systma, and Katie Schultz. The MUN Club is an excellent way to get involved and stay connected.

Conferences Outside of School including PACMUN:

• PACMUN (Pacific + MUN) is now one of the largest conferences offered in the northwest held at the Sheraton Hotel at 1400 6^th AVE, Seattle, 98101. This conference is unique in that it is student organized, which makes it one of the best conferences. The organizers and participants are passionate and dedicated toward providing a fun and rewarding experience. Liberty has a strong connection with PACMUN since one of its founders, Allegra Messina, was a patriot. We have yet to attend and not win recognition. Several patriots have served as chairs and dais for the conference. See www.pacificmun.com for more information
• VIKMUN (Viking + MUN) is a conference held in Bellingham, WA at Western Washington University. It is organized through the university and its student body. Although not the size of Seattle’s conference, it offers a more intimate setting and some opportunities to participate in ways that may be limited during the big conferences. Liberty has participated at 2 VIKMUN conferences and received accolades. This conference is offered in the spring.
• WASMUN (Washington State + MUN) is the oldest high school model united nations conference here in the northwest and it is hosted by the University of Washington. This is another conference offered during the Spring. This conference offers the small setting with more committees and is located on the beautiful campus of UW. Liberty has attended the past two years and received accolades. See http://www.wasmun.org/
• MUNSA (MUN + San Antonio) is the largest MUN conference west of the Mississippi. This conference is unique in that it is student organized (part of a 4 year program), which makes it one of the best conferences. Located on the river walk of San Antonio, this conference offers some of the best experiences for rising MUN delegates. Each year provides a new theme. Some themes are realistic while others stretch the imagination. The conference is organized through the International School of the Americas which is Mrs. Motoko Abe’s former school. Liberty has yet to attend and compete, but I have led students there 3 times. The conference is usually held in December, but the schedule is still to be determined. See www.isamunsa.org
• NHSMUN (National High School + MUN) is the national MUN conference located in downtown Manhattan, NY. It is the world’s largest high school conference and features the most “prestigious substantive program available.” Hosted in the actual United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York, this conference offers a truly unique international experience with delegates from all over the world. Former Liberty students have attended this conference on an individual basis, and I have taken students as an adviser. This conference is scheduled for the first week of March during the spring. • EUROPEAN MUN Conferences (www.mymun.com/muns/europe ) are plentiful and offer an international experience of diplomacy in action. Check out the site listed above and find one that interests you. Students can register, participate, and attend as individual students or teams. Although Liberty students have organized and attended global international trips with me (Peru 2014 and Italy 2016), the team has yet to participate in a global conference. Team trips like this will take a minimum of 5 months to prepare. However, individuals can go as freely as they like.
