Project: 'Love (what is it?) cinematic romance short film'
My vision for this project is to display a cinematic story on screen elegantly about love (physically black love). Collecting all elements together I aim to have; a narrated voice poetically go into detail about what love is, the feeling that it brings, the importance of loving one another (I want it in a style where the narrator is talking about a signifigant other in 1st and 2nd person, while still staying on topic). This will match perfectly with the visuals I have planned to capture a young dark-skinned couple wearing the same outfit and showcasing chemistry on screen. In addition, a warm, illuminated and intimate aesthetic will be presented through mild level intensity of lighting to compliment the complexion of the actors. (All based in a studio with a couch in the centre + the orange backdrop)
In most scenarios for anything love related, red is always the best colour to work with, however for me, Orange is the perfect colour to apply that mood of warmth and closeness cinematically.
Inspiration
As seen, both videos cinematically emulate the essence of black love and the key thing that plays a part is the level of intimacy which is a main element within telling the story. It satisfies my creative eye because they both fit within the aesthetic I want to work around but also some of the visuals I want to capture.
The main actions you see from both videos are:
Both couples smiling
Being in close proximity.
Eye contact
Physical touch (Holding hands, arms wrapped around another, touch of a cheek).
These small things uphold the strong side of black love which was seen a lot more in the past, but you don't see a lot of nowadays. However, I am certain that these will be included in the visuals.
More of the aesthetic/Accurate look I want
As you can see from both the short film and the music video, the white streak from the lighting being displayed on the side or centre of the actor/actress' faces makes their complexion emerge beautifully, along with the colour in the background assisting that. This is just another example of what I'm looking to replicate cinematically.
Project - You don't know me (Music video)
My vision for this music video is to display a new school and retro styled cinematic story for my client/rapper 'Cozy'. His song 'You don't know me', mainly focuses on his life, how people assume the most about him and the switch up from individuals when one has made it. As I know the type of similar aesthetic and influence cozy has from rappers like samrecks and knucks, I plan to display Cozy rapping about his life while keeping the whole environment being vibrant and energetic. Collecting all elements I aim to have; A Vhs filmmaker for the retro appeal of the music video, this way it's easier to cut back and forth in post production. Another cinematographer for more creative freedom, and 3 different locations for 3 different days (Flash studios in star lane, Hyde park and shoreditch). My reasoning for this is to add more quality to the music video so the audience can witness a variety of eye catching visuals.
Inspiration
As seen, all four of these videos cinematically emulate the appeal of new school uk rap with a partial retro look. The key thing that plays a part is the level of energy which is a main element within telling the story and what I want to get through to the artist to display, when directing. It satisfies my creative eye because they all fit within the aesthetic I want to work around but also some of the visuals I want to capture.
The main actions you see from all videos are:
The artist being in close proximity to the camera.
flexing,
Vibing/dancing.
Gestures.
These small things usually present the artist's charisma through the music video which I aim to replicate in my own creative manner.
