Period 7 - Archery

The scenario:

The school has received money from a grant to install a 9-hole disc golf course at the high school. Your task will be to design the best course possible that would fit within the boundaries of the school.

Suggestions from expert (Alex):

A good starting point (for the course) would be the area behind the library and going down to the football field but not using the football field but more so the area around it. Utilizing elevation and some obstacles because we don't have too many trees for say a wooded course. But studying layouts of smaller courses like Poineer Park in Stayton or some of the holes at Dallas Park or all parks in general can help get an idea of a layout. We are just somewhat limited with space and such. Most courses are 18 holes but a lot can be 9 as well which is what we our doing. Getting a Google map of the land is good too.

Additional Resources:

Suggested Timeline:

  • Wednesday - 10/6

    • Topic: What is Disc Golf?

    • Discuss any previous experiences with disc golf.

    • If weather permits, ask Amy Houghtaling or Mr. Kidd to borrow the disc golf set-up and play around with the different discs and get a feel for the sport.

    • If there is time, preview the other additional resources listed above.

  • Thursday - 10/7

  • Monday - 10/11 & Tuesday - 10/12

    • Divide the class into two teams.

    • Each team will use the suggestions from the expert above, along with information obtained through the additional resources to develop their own 9-hole disc golf course.

    • Courses should be as detailed as possible.

  • Wednesday 10/13 & Thursday 10/14

    • The two teams should present their course designs. Good design features should be noted. Top ideas from both designs should be integrated into one final course proposal. This should include discussion from each of the students.
