The Scramble for Africa: The Height of Imperialism
Overview
Students discover how European powers expanded their influence over the African continent in a quest for power and resources during the 19th century. We look at the political, economic, religious, and social change that occurs as a result of European expansion in addition to the responses by resistance movements. Students uncover the stories of this era through research, looking at primary and secondary resources, peer presentations, and engaging in discussions.
Student Work
After learning about the various reasons why Europeans colonized Africa, students applied this knowledge in the form of posters from a European perspective. Students learned about the pseudo-science of Social Darwinism and how the viewpoint influenced the atrocious treatment of native Africans.
Students read the book Abina and the Important Men, which depicts a story about slavery in a place where it is supposedly outlawed. The book shows various dynamics, and students' warmups/reading logs focus on corroborating the information presented in the book with other primary sources.
Other Activities
Jigsaw students with different vocab terms. Students sketch the term in anyway that makes sense to them and then gives an explanation of the sketch and the term's significance.
Jigsaw students through different concepts. Students research a particular topic or person and create a slide which they then teach to the reset of the class. Each slide has a "secret ingredient" which is an interesting fact or question related to the topic.
