Strengthening Undergraduate Mathematics in Minnesota (SUMM)

In an effort to bring the positive impact of MPM to the broader regional mathematics community, this winter we will host the Strengthening Undergraduate Mathematics in Minnesota (SUMM) conference on January 15-17, 2027 at the University of Minnesota.

The main goals of this conference are to cultivate and strengthen the mathematics undergraduate community in the state of Minnesota and nearby region, broaden participation and success in mathematical careers, and develop lasting connections between regional institutions. The conference will focus on the mathematical and professional development of undergraduate and post-secondary students to bolster their career-readiness and introduce them to opportunities, resources, and mathematics research. We hope to provide student participants with supportive mentors and role models in academia, education, industry, and government.

Who is SUMM for?

SUMM is focused on expanding access to mathematical research in and beyond Minnesota. Anyone who supports this goal is encouraged to participate. We especially encourage participants from the following groups:

1. Students at post-secondary institutions in Minnesota and neighboring states

2. Faculty as post-secondary institutions in Minnesota and neighboring states

3. Alumni of MPM and local industry professionals

Students will interact with other students, academics, and industry professionals. Faculty, staff, and other educators will build community, share and learn new resources, and connect with industry professionals as well as colleagues and active researchers. Student participants will also have the chance to present a short (5 minute) talk about mathematics or a math education topic of their choice. MPM alumni and local industry professionals contribute their knowledge of post-graduation trajectories, contribute to the mathematical community beyond academia, and learn about current research developments.

Tentative schedule

SUMM will run from the afternoon of Friday January 15th through midday Sunday January 17th. We tentatively plan on hosting the following sessions.

• Small group reflections

• Lightning talks

• Keynote mini-workshops

• Research overview sessions

• Panel: Career paths in the mathematical sciences

• Panel: MPM at your institution

• Break-out room discussions

• Round table discussions for educators

Registration and funding details

SUMM will be partially supported by NSF DMS Award#2441034. We hope to provide financial support for ground transportation to and from and lodging during the duration of the conference. In particular, we hope to provide support to student participants from institutions without additional travel and lodging support.
