Mary was also the first to push for opening a branch library. Although she had left the library before the Grace Maring branch opened, its existence owes a great deal to her push to open a branch on the south side of town near Wilson.

Susan Weimer was appointed as acting librarian until formally chosen to head MPL by the end of 1930. She supervised both the opening of the Grace Keiser Maring and Lincoln School Libraries during her tenure as Librarian. Due to ill health in 1934, Miss Weimer, at the recommendation of her doctor, took a leave of absence for several months but ultimately asked to resign as Librarian and be placed in a position with less responsibility. She became acting Librarian during Susan Weimer's leave of absence due to illness. When Weimer resigned, Robards continued in that role until she was formally appointed as Librarian in June 1935. Sally was head of the library at the height of the Great Depression, and many who had lost their jobs sought comfort and intellectual stimulation within its walls. During her tenure, Robert and Helen Lynd came to MPL to work on their second book, Middletown in Transition: A Study in Cultural Conflicts, published in 1937. Sally left Munce Public Library to marry Donald Roberts, whom she met at the library. However, this was not the end of her service to MPL. From 1953-1959, Sally Robards Roberts served on the library's Board of Directors and was even President from 1954-1955.

In this role, he sent books to armed services personnel fighting overseas. Walter Kaiser left Muncie in 1945 to become the county librarian for Wayne County, Michigan, overseeing twenty branch and nine station libraries, including those in Detroit. While there, he installed an automated assembly line for books to be processed and ready to go by the time they made it to the end of the line. He also invented a new charge system and won the Michigan Library Association's Librarian of the Year award in 1966.

During his tenure as the Chief Librarian, Dan Williams had expanded both the Business and Technical collection and the reference department, which included a professional librarian. The library also microfilmed all of the back issues of the Muncie newspapers and took over the extension serve at the hospital. In 1951, Williams left MPL to become the associate librarian and the eventual head of Des Moines Public Library. He, unfortunately, died tragically at the age of 53 from an automobile accident on the Kansas Turnpike while en route to Oklahoma in order to pick up daughter Nancy, who was a student at the University of Oklahoma.

During his tenure as MPL's Librarian, circulation, the number of borrowers, and services increased including the addition of a film collection and audiovisual department. The main library (i.e. the Carnegie building) had also undergone a complete renovation during those four years with Naylor at the helm. In 1955, Lewis Naylor left MPL to become Cuyahoga Public Library's Director.

Under his leadership, the library expanded exponentially. Those new locations were the Webb Hunt Library, Kennedy Branch Library, the Gateway Center, Huffer Library, the Audiovisual Center, and Centennial Library (aka Connection Corner). After he retired, Jones stayed involved with the library by attending and participating in programs, becoming a Friends of MPL member and volunteer, and staying up-to-date on library initiatives. He died in 2016 at the ripe old age of 102.
Full Name: Mr. Arthur Solomon Meyers
Dates of Tenure: 1980-1986
Birth: 14 Dec 1937 (New York, NY)
Parents: Nathan Meyers, Selma Leeser
Marriage: Marcia Indianer, 1961 (New York City, NY)
Death: 2023 May 24 (Middletown, CT)
Burial: Fountain Hill Cemetery (Deep River, CT)
A great many things happened at Muncie Public Library throughout the six, short years that Arthur Meyers served as the library's Director. MPL won the very first John Sessions Memorial Award from the American Library Association for their efforts to work with the labor community. Two of the buildings within the Muncie Public Library system also celebrated major anniversaries. Maring Library, MPL's first branch, celebrated 50 years of service to Center Township in 1980 while Main Library (now Carnegie) observed its 80th birthday in 1984 with Meyers himself dressing up as Andrew Carnegie during a program to observe the milestone. In fact, Carnegie Library was updated and majorly renovated during Arthur Meyers' tenure as Library Director.
Full Name: Miss Patricia "Pat" Schaefer
Dates of Tenure: 1986-1995
Long before she became the Director of Muncie Public Library, Pat Schaefer was the Audiovisual Librarian from 1959-1981, and under her leadership, the audiovisual collection grew to the point that it had to be relocated four times! She briefly served as MPL's Assistant Director before becoming the library's Director in 1986. As Director, Pat lead MPL's efforts to automate library systems, restore the historic Wheeling Pike As It Appeared in 1891 painting, and provide greater accommodations to the disabled before compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act made it mandatory. Furthermore, she established temporary libraries throughout the county as part of a grant program in an attempt to institute library service in Delaware County. Unfortunately, the attempt did not succeed, but the effort was not wasted. The Yorktown Public Library is evidence of that, and now, MPL has a reciprocity agreement with that library.
Full Name: Ms. Virginia "Ginny" (Miller) Nilles
Dates of Tenure: 1995-2017
If one thing characterizes Ginny's tenure as Muncie Public Library's Director, it's that of change. She served as the library's Director for over twenty years, and during that time, Ginny consolidated the Maring and Hunt branches into the much larger Maring-Hunt Library, which was in the old Wilson Middle School. Under her leadership, MPL was the first to institute educational programs to supplement school literacy efforts, which resulted in the Great Achievers and Ready Readers programs. She stressed the importance of remaining current on technology so that kids could have the tools they needed to function in society later on in life while also addressing the digital divide that exists in Muncie. This initiative led to the reimagining of Conley Library to Connection Corner as MPL's technology center. Ginny also felt that it was important for MPL to help preserve Muncie's heritage, which led to the building of the Local History and Genealogy Center. Although it ultimately closed, the library still maintains a local history and genealogy research center housed in Carnegie Library, something that is unique for public libraries. Last but not least, Ginny expanded Kennedy Library, which was in great need of more space to adequately serve the community.
Full Name: Ms. Akilah Shukura Nosakhere
Dates of Tenure: 2017-2024
When MPL hired Akilah Nosakhere, she became the first African-American to hold the position of Library Director throughout the institution's long history within the community. Akilah grew up in Muncie, graduated from Burris Laboratory School, and even worked for MPL from 1984-1985 as part of the Community Information Project, a database that included information on various types of organizations in the county. As Director of MPL, Akilah continued to work towards expanding the Gateway to Gardening Pavilions, offering the south side of Muncie a space to grow fresh produce, experience nature, exercise, and gather for special events. She also made efforts to ensure that the library's collections and programs reflected the diversity of our Muncie-Center Township community.
Full Name: Mr. Alan Kornblau
Dates of Tenure: 2024-present
Alan Kornblau began his tenure as MPL's new Library Director on March 6, 2024 after a nationwide search. A graduate of Florida State University, he has worked a number of years in a variety of roles at both public libraries and library support organizations. As Director, he will continue the MPL tradition of finding new and innovative ways for us to serve the Muncie-Center Township community, especially in terms of staying up-to-date on technological trends.
