Whenever I ask someone Urdu songs, they end up giving me trendy mediocre Bollywood sounding music. Give me old songs, new songs, rap songs, anything but the song should do justice to how beautiful Urdu is as a language. There is no specific genra I like. I like anything that feels poetic. To understand how ubiquitous celebrated-whiteness is throughout Hindi and Urdu lyrics, we need to dismantle and analyze what the songs are actually saying. Below are some Bollywood songs from the last 20 years addressing whiteness in the form of the heterosexual female.
When such songs are played at weddings and other parties, they become associated with celebration, highly-consumed and reinforcing the release of songs with similar lyrics. There are hundreds of more songs, from folk to more Bollywood, repeating the preference of fairness over darkness in skin. As such, it manifests as colorism and racism women face in their private and public lives. This is the case in an NPR podcast where a darker-skinned Indian woman started using fairness cream after hearing songs marking whiteness as beauty.
This qualitative study of Pakistani-Urduwedding songs allows a closer look at the gender situation,and towards the understanding of the process ofconstruction and perpetuation of gender-basedstereotypes. However, the major concern of this study is tounderstand the portrayal of each gender along with thequestion that does such portrayal underlines thetraditional gender roles and gender inequality. Taking adiscourse analysis perspective, this study analyzes textualdata from the lyrics of the seventeen wedding songs. Thesong selection was based on purposive samplingtechnique. The data were collected through transcriptionand recording of the audios of the songs. As a result ofthematic analysis thirteen themes emerged, ten portrayingthe female gender and four portraying the male gender.These themes reveal important findings that support andreinforce the gender-based stereotypes and also reflectgender hierarchy, normative heterosexual relationships,kinship norms and gender subversions. 0852c4b9a8
