AMT is movement-based. During your session you are an active participant. Your therapist will direct you to move in prescribed ways, while they apply manual manipulation of your tissue. You will also be instructed to move through gentle Actions. Your therapy plan and progression is developed based on your initial evaluation and is not the same for everyone. This comprehensive approach provides long-term results, not seen elsewhere. To enhance your therapy results, an individualized program of Actions are designed for you to do at home or throughout your day. You may also be encouraged to make some life-style changes to complement your Active Myofascial Therapy.
AMT was developed in 1987 by Irene Diamond, R.T., a movement specialist, neuromuscular re-educator and Director of Diamond Massage & Wellness Center in San Francisco, California, USA. Diamond had a spinal cord injury and was paralyzed at the age of 15 as a result of a gymnastic accident. She learned to rehabilitate herself through movement and massage. She attained her BA degree in Rehabilitation & Recreation/ Movement Therapy, and used herself and clients as the first guinea pigs for Active Myofascial Therapy. She fine tuned the method and has now helped thousands of people get out of pain. Diamond teaches AMT to pain specialists and therapists across the nation. This AMT technique is the result of her life work.
