.Author and Illustrator Penny Eldred
Penny Eldred lives in Upstate New York and spends her summers living on a boat in the Finger Lakes and the winters, tucked away in a cozy little room in a big Queen Anne house, creating stories and bringing the characters to life through her illustrations and 3-dimensional art.
Being allowed to work in the school library as a child, her love of books began by returning books to the shelves, learning the Dewey Decimal System, and stamping library cards while sitting in an oversized swivel chair at a big oak desk. The smell of the books, the feel of the pages, the colorful illustrations, and listening to stories being read made an indelible mark on Ms. Penny.
Hoping to create similar memories in those she reads and writes for, she has attempted to create an atmosphere where all five senses bring her stories to life. When Ms. Penny shares her story of The Gingerbread Inn, she brings along a life-sized “gingerbread” house filled with the characters from her book, a few other little surprises, and of course a big-sized book.
Ms. Penny’s unique life experiences and love of art motivate her storytelling and illustrations. Often taking true-to-life experiences and adding just a bit of whimsy, she finds her characters and their stories in the most unusual places. Her first two books, The Gingerbread Inn and Camila and the Texas Snail Steve are examples of that concept, as each started as a true story.
