What is Utah Water Watch?Utah Water Watch (UWW) is a water quality education and data collection program that seeks to increase awareness about the importance of water quality and promote stewardship of Utah’s aquatic resources.
UWW is managed by USU Water Quality Extension in partnership with the Utah Division of Water Quality. It is a program that allows the public to cooperate with the UT DWQ in monitoring Utah’s lakes and streams.
For over 10 years students and volunteers have monitored water quality through successful programs such as Utah Lakes Watch, Utah Stream Team, and Stream Side Science.
What is our role?
Problem-based learning: Mount Logan Discovery students monitor water quality at two locations on the Blacksmith Fork River, one at the confluence of the Logan River (near the Planet Walk project along the Logan River trail), and another location near the top of Blacksmith Fork Canyon at the Shenoah Campground. We also conduct water quality tests at two locations on Curtis Creek (a tributary to the Blacksmith Fork River)--one above the Hardware Ranch meadow where they feed elk, and the other below the meadow.
In the classroom, students work in cooperative groups to look at water quality issues from various stakeholder positions. Using the connection log (linked in left menu bar), students organize their thoughts, look at issues from various perspectives, and create an evidence-based postion. For a final project, students create an argumentative essay stating and defending a postion.
